Thoughts?
(I hate inverse ETFs, so I have no other ideas.)

AGG. My definition of a Bear market would be when the 6 month ROC of AGG is above the 6 month ROC of SPY. When that happens, move into AGG and wait until the 6 month ROC of SPY rises back above that of AGG.

Your goal is not to make money in a bear market, but to protect current assets. Too much of a trader's perspective, not thinking about wealth accumulation. Just my personal spin on things, which has evolved over my time here to more of a longer term investment mindset.

Kevin,
A chance for another SF lesson.
How does one code monthly ROC? I would guess "draw weekly ROC(24, 1)". How long a smoothing period would you recommend? And, in this example, how does one get SPY and AGG on the same chart?
Thanks,
Graftonian

Well, luckily the ROC is just the percent gain from X days ago. Since each quarter has 63 days or 13 weeks for trading, one could use ROC(126,1) if SF let the ROC() function look back more than 100 days - currently it does not.
I use weekly ROC(13,1) for a quarter year and weekly ROC(26,1) for a half-year. It works fine for me with no smoothing.
