I have noticed the same phenomonon that you are talking about. Don't know if it is the Market Maker doing this or just big money.
I have interpereted this as a last minute attempt to squeeze out weak hands so they aren't creating resistance at higher prices, this also makes a few more cheaper shares available for big money before the big move and takes out stops from those that just bought in earlier that day.
However, I have seen this happen primarily on the intraday charts with the resulting climb within the same day. This makes the really good entry appear one day before an end of day filter can catch it.
If you would, let us know how this filter & strategy works out in practice.

HG and I have been trading ADOT.
One thing to notice is... how they drop it towards the close.
Run the price up BEFORE the market opens the next day...
Draw in a few sheep and DROP it!
This happens after the POP to .04xx
Check it out...

Looking at the last 6 days I see gaps up gaps down and all sorts of volatility on ADOT.
The last 4 days all open higher and close lower since the stochastic -xover and the stock going into distribution on Fri./ Mon.
FWIW, What I have noticed with many stocks is that as the distribution phase is winding down and the sellers are drying up, often times just as the 15 & 25 HR.MAs are starting to flatten out and draw in buyers, big money will slam it down hard, often times by what appears to be just a removal of the bids and not a large influx of sellers.
Or they will pull the bids just before a run like they did with TRAD yesterday.
I was watching the Bid / Ask and there were very few Asks but the price dropped precipitously from 2:35 ~ 3:15 just to turn and run up on big volume near the end of the session. ( 5 min. chart ).

EWZuber:
Once you identify the "AX", it makes it a whole lot simpler to trade.
NITE is the "AX" in ADOT. SCHB is "2nd in command".
If NITE is on the ASK and out of the money on the BID, time to sell.
If NITE is on the BID and out of the money on the ASK, time to buy.
If NITE is on the BID and ASK, time to wait.
That's trading the market vs. trading the stock with charts.
NITE plays dirty. You gotta be quick. There's money to be made!
MAY ALL YOUR FILLS BE COMPLETE.

I don't see how a stock can make movements, regardless of who the MM is, without making the moves show up on charts.
